Abstract
This industrial internship and study report was conducted at PT Patria Maritim Perkasa (PMP), a shipbuilding and engineering company operating in the maritime industry. The internship was carried out in the Warehouse/Main Store division, focusing on warehouse management of piping materials used in ship production. The study aims to identify storage inefficiencies caused by overstock conditions, limited pipe rack capacity, and the absence of a fixed bin location system, which resulted in extended lead time, data inaccuracies, and increased occupational safety risks.
The research applied a descriptive qualitative approach supported by light quantitative analysis using stock data and storage capacity calculations. Data were collected through structured observation, semi-structured interviews with warehouse operators and administrators, and analysis of SAP ERP inventory reports. The findings revealed that several piping materials experienced overcapacity exceeding 100 units per item, while existing pipe racks could only accommodate approximately 60–70% of incoming volume.
To address these issues, a warehouse relayout and structural modification of 13 piping stands (Type A and Type B) were proposed, increasing storage capacity by ≥40% without expanding the physical area. Additionally, the integration of a Fixed Bin Location system into the SAP ERP (Warehouse/Material Management Module) was recommended to improve inventory accuracy and reduce material searching lead time. A standardized Material Handling SOP aligned with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS/K3) principles was also developed to minimize manual material handling risks.
The proposed solutions are expected to enhance warehouse efficiency, improve stock accuracy, reduce operational lead time, and strengthen safety compliance, thereby supporting smoother ship production activities in the long term.
Description
This internship report analyzes warehouse management of piping materials at PT Patria Maritim Perkasa. The study identifies storage inefficiencies caused by overstock conditions, limited pipe rack capacity, and the absence of a fixed bin location system in SAP ERP. To address these issues, a warehouse relayout and the modification of 13 piping stands were proposed to increase storage capacity by at least 40% without expanding the physical area. The integration of a Fixed Bin Location system and the implementation of a standardized Material Handling SOP are recommended to improve inventory accuracy, reduce lead time, and enhance occupational safety.
