Abstract

Representing local culture in 3D animation requires an appropriate lighting strategy to ensure its aesthetic and philosophical values are optimally conveyed. This study aims to analyze and implement visual elements from concept art into 3D lighting settings to highlight Balinese cultural elements based on the Tri Hita Karana philosophy. Utilizing a qualitative Practice-led Research approach, the research workflow was designed through six main stages using Blender software and directly validated by expert practitioners from the professional animation industry. The results show that the integration of eight key parameters, which include light angle, color temperature, light intensity, fog density, volumetric lighting, shadow ratio, visual hierarchy, and post-production is effective and consistent in representing various times of day (morning, noon, evening, and night). This lighting setup successfully maintains the banten sodan as the main Point of Interest and comprehensively brings the atmosphere of a traditional Balinese market to life. In conclusion, the resulting 3D lighting technical guidelines are proven to strengthen visual storytelling and atmospheric depth, while providing a practical benchmark for cultural-themed animation production in Indonesia.
