Abstract

Visual resemblance between a new character and a popular one can lead to two contrasting outcomes: heightened initial recognition and appeal, versus strong associations that diminish the work's distinct visual identity. This study examines the visual similarity between Shiku, the protagonist of the animation Shadows of Redemption and Gojo Satoru from Jujutsu Kaisen, a character designed without direct inspiration. A comparative qualitative case study method was employed, comprising three stages: (A) an assessment of similarity across five visual indicators by five informants via in-depth interviews, (B) the Manga Matrix (Form and Costume Matrix), and (C) a synthesis of perceptions and structural elements. The results indicate that hair color, facial features, and light-dark contrast are the primary triggers for these associations, whereas character impression, bangs, body volume, and attire serve as distinguishing factors. Spontaneous associations were distributed across multiple characters, suggesting that visual triggers operate at the level of individual elements rather than through a direct link to a single specific character. These findings can serve as a reference for evaluating character designs during the pre-production phase.
