Abstract
Laser cutting technology is widely used in manufacturing processes because it is capable of producing high-precision cuts. The ACIERA L1390 laser cutting machine with a maximum power of 100 W is one of the machines available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Batam State Polytechnic for cutting experiments. This study aims to analyze the effect of cutting parameters on the cutting quality of 3 mm Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), which was evaluated based on the level of burn marks. The research employed an experimental method by conducting a total of 27 cutting tests. Kerf refers to the width of the material removed during the cutting process. The cutting quality was evaluated visually based on the burn mark criteria. The results showed that most parameter combinations at low laser power failed to produce satisfactory cuts and resulted in burn marks along the kerf area. The study concludes that the effects of cutting parameters on cutting quality can be evaluated through kerf width and burn marks along the cut edge. The recommended cutting parameters obtained from this study were a laser power of 20.5%, a cutting speed of 12 mm/s, and a 0 mm lens focus, where the focal point was positioned directly on the material surface. This parameter combination provided the best cutting quality based on kerf width and burn mark characteristics. The limitation of this study lies in the measurement method and measuring instrument used. Therefore, future studies are recommended to use a Mitutoyo PJ-A3000 Profile Projector to obtain more accurate measurements of cutting dimensions and laser cutting quality.
