Abstract

The progress of manufacturing technology is increasingly rapid, all competing to be the best, the need for high quality products produced at high production speeds as well. This trial research is to determine the results of product surface smoothness using constant cutting speed (G96), determine the results of product surface smoothness using constant rotation speed (G97), and determine the comparison of surface smoothness quality from the results of the two experiments using 2 different types of materials namely ST 37 and S45C. This research method is experimental research, turning ST 37 and S45C steel specimens with the same parameters using each program mode from G96 and G97. Each specimen will be turned in stages, namely with 2 levels only and each level will be tested as many as 3 points of surface quality using a measuring tool, namely the Mitutoyo surface tester. The measurement results will be obtained from the average surface smoothness or roughness of the two specimens with details of the ST 37 specimen using a constant cutting speed parameter of µm 2.27 in class N7 and a constant rotation speed parameter of µm 3.03 in class N8, while in the S45C specimen using a constant cutting speed parameter of µm 2.22 in class N7 and a constant rotation speed parameter of µm 3.08 in class N8. G96 mode parameters are better and better results than using G97 mode in turning done on a CNC machine.
