Abstract

The transfer of heavy Gable End structures (118 tons) from a jetty to a barge in offshore projects represents a high risk operation. This study analyzes this process by integrating Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations for padeye structural strength and deflection, alongside field observations concerning operational and HSE aspects. Simulation results indicate padeye safety factors (SF) ranging from 1.92–5.71 (approaching/meeting DNVGL-ST-N001 standards) and a maximum deflection of 18.4 mm, signifying adequate structural stability. However, field observations identified critical human factors gaps, such as improper body/hand positioning and minor miscommunication, which can impact the actual safety margin. Recommendations include enhancing human factors training and optimizing the use of auxiliary tools for risk mitigation. This research presents an integrated guideline combining FEM analysis and field observations, contributing to improved safety and efficiency in offshore heavy lifting operations
