Abstract

Quadruped character animation, particularly that of horses, represents one of the most significant technical challenges in digital animation production. The competency gap in academic environments where animation training remains dominated by humanoid characters creates an urgent need for applicable technical references for manual quadruped animation. This research aims to implement and analyze the pose-to-pose technique in creating a horse walk cycle using Blender software, guided by five dominant animation principles: Timing, Arcs, Secondary Action, Follow Through & Overlapping Action, and Slow In & Slow Out. The methodology employed is applied research with a qualitative descriptive approach. The animation process was executed through four production stages: blocking, blocking plus, splining, and polish, utilizing a 32-frame horse walk cycle reference sheet and Muybridge’s chrono photography as technical benchmarks. Success was measured through a 1-4 scale assessment rubric based on the five animation principles by two expert validators, with a minimum average target of 3.0. The results of this study are expected to serve as a practical technical reference for quadruped animation for students in the Animation Study Program.
