Abstract
GloVoice is a hybrid animation project that combines three-dimensional (3D) assets with an illustrative two-dimensional (2D) visual style through toon shading based on Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR). This study aims to develop a custom High Dynamic Range Image (HDRI) built from 2D digital illustration to resolve the aesthetic mismatch that occurs when photorealistic HDRI is used as the environmental lighting source for toon-shaded characters. The research applies a Practice-Based Research (PBR) method carried out through four stages: exploration, experimentation, production, and evaluation. The resulting illustrative HDRI was evaluated by three experts, consisting of one academic lecturer in 3D animation and two industry practitioners, across six evaluation aspects covering technical implementation, visual harmony, NPR style consistency, lighting and atmosphere, compositing effectiveness, and industrial production feasibility. The results show that the illustrative HDRI builds stronger aesthetic consistency between the environment and the toon-shaded characters compared to photorealistic HDRI, and that the compositing stage plays an important role in refining the final visual integration. This approach offers a more practical alternative for stylized hybrid animation pipelines, as it does not require specialized camera equipment or on-location shooting to produce an environment that visually matches an illustrative character style.
