Abstract

The availability of BISINDO learning media for non-deaf individuals remains limited, particularly outside the Special School (SLB) environment. This study aimed to develop an educational motion graphic as an introductory BISINDO learning medium and to evaluate its effectiveness in improving non-deaf students’ understanding of the BISINDO alphabet and basic vocabulary at Politeknik Negeri Batam. A Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the 4D development model was adopted in this study. The developed product consisted of three Full HD motion graphic videos validated by media, sign language, and learning experts, achieving feasibility scores of 90%, 79%, and 95%, respectively. The effectiveness of the developed media was evaluated through a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 30 non-deaf students. The mean score increased from 11.8 in the pretest to 18.2 in the posttest, representing an average improvement of 6.37 points. Statistical analysis using a Paired Samples T-Test yielded t = 16.2, df = 29, and p < 0.001. Furthermore, Cohen's d reached 2.95, while the average N-Gain score was 0.917, indicating a high level of learning improvement. These findings indicate that the developed motion graphic effectively improves non-deaf students' understanding of basic BISINDO and can serve as an alternative learning medium to support more inclusive communication within the university environment.
