Abstract

Facial expressions are an essential element in 3D animated film production, as they significantly influence the delivery of emotions and character portrayal. However, the process of controlling facial expressions in 3D characters still requires considerable time, particularly when animators must repeatedly adjust expression poses for each scene. In addition, maintaining expression consistency and ensuring compatibility with the toon shader visual style present challenges in the production of the 3D animated film Glovoice. This study implements a 2D facial rig technique based on a pose library for the 3D character of Glovoice to facilitate facial expression management. The pose library system is utilized to store and reuse expression poses more efficiently and practically. The development process follows the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) methodology, which consists of the stages of concept, design, material collection, assembly, testing, and distribution. System testing was conducted using the black-box testing method and user evaluation through questionnaires distributed to 28 students of the Animation Engineering Study Program at Politeknik Negeri Batam and four members of the Glovoice animation team. The results indicate that the proposed technique improves animation workflow efficiency, maintains expression consistency, and produces expressive character visuals. It can therefore be concluded that the implementation of a pose library-based 2D facial rig can serve as an alternative workflow in 3D animation production, particularly in supporting a more practical, consistent, and visually suitable facial expression setup for toon-shaded animation projects.
